Chan Hei Nam

Artist Conversation:

Why did you choose landscape painting as your artistic subject?

Hei Nam: "In front of nature, one always feels humble, and it's this humility that led me to choose watercolor, a smaller medium in the realm of painting. The places I’ve walked—mountains, fields, and seaside—deeply fascinate me. These unremarkable little scenes are like fragments of life that form another way for me to view the world."

It seems that painting increasingly occupies your life and is slowly becoming your profession. Have you ever thought about becoming a full-time artist?

Hei Nam: "Life is full of coincidences, intertwined with inevitability, transforming like watercolor in its enchanting complexity. Every time I think about everything before painting, I find myself reflecting on myself afterward. I know that what I see is not what I think, and what I think is not what I paint. There’s always some force in nature that leads me to move forward."

Artist Profile - Chan Hei Nam

Chan Hei Nam is an artist based in Hong Kong. Her creative sanctuary is located at the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) Artspace in Wong Chuk Hang, where she continually explores and shares her artistic vision. For Hei Nam, the paintbrush serves as a diary, transforming the fluid experiences of life into warm, profound visual narratives.

Her artistic practice spans watercolor, oil painting, and mixed media, navigating gracefully between realism and impressionism. In her early years, she relocated to Taiwan to study oil painting and sketching rigorously under the tutelage of the renowned master Yim Mau-Kun. Upon returning to Hong Kong, she further expanded her creative horizons by exploring the boundless possibilities of watercolor and various other mediums. Characterized by agile brushstrokes and emotionally resonant palettes, her works often draw inspiration from obscure fragments of daily life, vast landscapes, and dreamlike imagery, capturing moments that are fleeting yet eternal.

In recent years, Hei Nam has traveled extensively across Sichuan, Yunnan, Xinjiang, and other regions for sketching expeditions and artistic exchanges. Her series of works, inspired by high-altitude snow mountains, grasslands, and local customs, reflects her creative response to a continuous dialogue with nature, the self, and humanity. Through her gentle yet steadfast brushstrokes, she invites viewers to find inner tranquility and a sense of belonging within her canvases.

Art, Social Enterprise & Public Practice

Beyond her studio practice, Hei Nam is deeply committed to giving back to society, fostering art inclusion, and promoting cultural heritage:

• Art Inclusion: In 2023, Hei Nam founded Walking Hand in Hand Limited as a founding director. The following year, the organization collaborated with multiple rehabilitation centers to present the "Walking Hand in Hand" Charity Art Exhibition. The event brought together over 200 artists, art enthusiasts, and individuals with disabilities, raising significant public awareness and bringing warmth to social care.

• Art Accessibility (Merge Art): She founded the social enterprise Merge Art, serving as its Art Director. Dedicated to integrating art into everyday life, Merge Art drives art education, exhibition curation, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. By extending art beyond traditional gallery walls into restaurants, corporate spaces, and homes, she envisions art as a bridge that heals lives and connects souls.

• Cultural Heritage: In 2024, Hei Nam was selected as one of the featured artists in the second cohort of the "Hong Kong Emerging Artists Exhibition" scheme, jointly organized by the Simon Suen Foundation, Sun Museum, and Jao Tsung-I Academy. Upholding the spirit of the late grand master Prof. Jao Tsung-I in revitalizing Chinese culture, she actively dedicates herself to the preservation and promotion of traditional Chinese culture and intangible cultural heritage, supporting Hong Kong's development as a vibrant center for international cultural and art exchange.
